Delta state was created on the 27 August 1991 form the former Bendel state, it is an oil and agricultural producing state in the south-south Nigeria. Delta state has a total land area of 16,842 square kilometers (6,503 sq mi) with 25 local government areas: Ethiope West, Ethiope East, Okpe, Sapele, Udu, Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Uvwie, Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North East, Ika South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, Ukwuani, Bomadi, Burutu, Isoko North, Isoko South, Patani, Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West.
The capital city is Asaba, located at the northern end of the state, with an estimated area of 762 square kilometres (294 sq mi), while Warri is the economic nerve center of the state and also the most populated located in the southern end of the state. Delta State shares common boundaries with Edo, Ondo, Imo, Anambra and Bayelsa States. Delta state is low-lying without remarkable hills. The state has a wide coastal belt inter-lace with rivulets and streams, which form part of the Niger Delta.
Delta state is home to some of the most fascinating tourist attractions, and here are my top 5 pick.
1.The Mungo park house.
The house was constructed by the Royal Niger Company (RNC) in 1886 and used as an administrative and a military house, named after Mungo Park who was born in 1771 in Foulshiels, Selkirk, Scotland and known for the discovery of river Niger. The mungo park house which is now a national museum is located along Nnebisi Road, Asaba, Delta state Nigeria. It's in depleting form due to harsh weather conditions,but the house has rich history of the journey to civilization, events in the country as well as subsequently serving as secretariat to several government agencies.The house is close to the Grand Hotel, Asaba, and is a definitely a place to visit.
2.The Araya Bible Site.
This houses a copy of the Holy Bible which was believed to have descended from heaven in 1914. Before 1911, it was believed that there was no sign of Christian activity in the isoko towns.The Bible was said to have landed on some tuber of yams that were soaked from rainfall but never got wet. The site attracts thousand of Christian pilgrims yearly. Araya Bible site is believed to be Isoko "CANAN LAND".
3.The Nana's Palace.
Built by a powerful nineteenth Century indigenous entrepreneur, Nana Olomu (1852–1916) who was an Itsekiri chief and merchant from the Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria. the palace is located at Koko in Warri North Local Government Area. The Palace has been recognized and approved as a National Monument.
4. River ethiope source.
The river ethiope source unlike other river source originated from the foot of a giant silk-cotton tree at Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area, Delta State and by the time it reaches sapele, it becomes deep enough to provide a habour for ocean-going vessels. Guest can swin, boat, and fish at the river ethiope.
5. Lander Brothers’ anchorage in Asaba.
Built in memory of the Lander brothers- Richard and John who are credited for the discovery of the mouth of the River Niger. A replica of the anchorage was erected at Asaba in their memory, the original one is located at Aboh. The present Anchorage has a restaurant which is not in operation at present and also an information center which visitors are to report to before being allowed access to the burial site and of course the museum which has as one of its best attractions the boat used by the Lander Brothers during their historic voyage.
