An interview with Roland Ekpere (A poet and an artist)

Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Roland, Roland onose Ekpere, the only boy in a family of five kids, am a 22 years old studying geology at the federal university of technology, a poet, a believer in changing the world through not just words but our actions, last but not the least am a Manchester united fan.

What inspired you to become an artist?
Basically what inspired me at first was the need to get things done by myself, when I was much younger I loved drawings, shapes, any art related but I could not do those things by myself and had to give it to people who were in that field to help me draw and paint but overtime they were very busy and didn't have time to help me, so I just had to pick up that mantle and do things from my own perspective.

When did you start drawing?
I started drawing at around 6-7 yrs of age.

What type of art work are you into?
The type of art am into is unknown even to me, I just work with my mood, inspiration, I might work with wood today, paint, the next day, or design logos, I am more of a jack of all trade, I just love to explore different areas of art, different mediums and expression. Am still looking for which medium I love the most but it's difficult because am in love with most of them. Am searching but am not lost.

What’s your favorite art work?
My favorite artwork might sound biased but it's actually an artwork I did of myself.

What do you dislike about the art world?
I don't really think that there is anything I dislike about the art world but there are certain things that really make me feel disturbed about it, things like forgery of original works, people seeing artworks as just trophies on the wall and nothing else, I just wish people could really get a glimpse of my epic journey to this stage in my life, because to me art is an expression, culture, way of life that transcends to all regions.

What are some challenges you have come across?
The challenges I have come across are mostly getting needed materials, some times I just have to improvise, also studying geology and drawing can be quite challenging some times due to hectic schooling schedule.

What advice can you give to other upcoming artist?
My advice to other upcoming artists is that they should never let people box their imagination, dreams and goals, and also continuous practice draws you closer to perfection because patience is a virtue.

DON'T WAIT FOR IT.

All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them. -James Lane Allen I once read the story of how marine merchants of those days use to wait at the harbour whenever they expect the arrival of their ships from the high seas. The practice was that the merchants would send the ships out to go and fetch treasures from far away while they wait at the dockside to receive them on arrival. Most times, because the sailors lacked the necessary passion and discretion of entrepreneurs, they often delayed pointlessly in bringing back the ships.
